A masterpiece by an unknown author

The Venus De Milo is known all over the world. There are many stories about how it was discovered. One of these stories goes that it could have been born before Christ. The statue was found on the island of Milos in the Aegean Sea. Today, it is believed that this statue is the work of Alexandros of Antioch. There are many legends about this unique statue, and its birth is portrayed on the latest coin from the Lithuanian Mint.  One story says that this special work of art could have remained undiscovered for a long time, had an ordinary soldier not visited the island of Milos where the Venus De Milo had been found by a local farmer. The farmer found the statue by accident and kept it in a goat pen next to his house. The statue soon travelled to the Louvre, where it was introduced to the world.

Mysterious Venus

The latest work from the Lithuanian Mint portrays the birth of Venus – the moment when the artist created a true masterpiece that later conquered the world. Today, it is believed that the Venus De Milo might portray Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. The statue is a reflection of female beauty, elegance, nudeness, and infinite delicacy.  Although the Venus De Milo is widely known around the world, it is surrounded by many mysteries and legends. For instance, it is unknown why the statue is armless. There are many versions to explain this, but the truth is probably known to Venus alone.   The coin dedicated to this masterpiece employs high relief and portrays the magic birth of the statue. High relief serves to reflect the texture of carved marble. The obverse of the coin specifies the 5-dollar denomination.
